Twitter suspends comedian Kathy Griffin’s account as platform cracks down on impersonation
Kathy Griffin Twitter account was suspended after she sent out a tweet impersonating Elon musk. Following the suspension, Elon Musk warned people about “engaging in impersonation.”
“I’ve decided that voting blue for their choice is only right,” she wrote as Musk.
“Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying ‘parody’ will be permanently suspended,” Musk said.
Griffin changed her display name to “Elon Musk,” however her Twitter did remain the same “@kathygriffin.”
“Previously, we issued a warning before suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning,” he added. “This will be clearly identified as a condition for signing up to Twitter Blue. Any name change at all will cause temporary loss of verified checkmark.”
Actress Valerie Bertinelli was another verified Twitter user who changed her display name to Elon Musk, but reverted back to using her name on Sunday.
“Okey-dokey I’ve had my fun and I think I made my point,” she tweeted. “I’m just not a ‘trending’ kind of gal. Never have been, never want to be. Have a safe Sunday everyone! xo.”
Comedian Sarah Silverman tweeted on Sunday that her account had been locked several times since Musk’s takeover.
Silverman had also impersonated Musk and tweeted: “I am a freedom of speech absolutist and I eat doody for breakfast every day.”

It is the pretending to be someone else that is the problem. Most people look at the display name not the id name.
