Darrell Brooks sentenced to life in prison for intentional attack on Christmas parade
Darrell Brooks, who was found guilty of six counts of first-degree intentional homicide after driving his SUV into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin on November 21, has been given 6 consecutive life sentences.
Noting Brooks’ lack of remorse, Judge Jennifer R. Dorow said that a life sentence would ensure the safety of the community. Brooks was given one life sentence for each person he killed.
“This community can only be safe if you’re behind bars for the rest of your life,” Judge Dorow said, according to Rolling Stone.
As reported by IBTimes, the following people were killed by Brooks nearly one year ago; Jackson Sparks, 8, Tamara Durand, 52, Jane Kulich, 52, Leanna “Lee” Owen, 71, Virginia Sorenson, 79, and Wilhelm Hospel, 81.
Dorow rejected any special dispensation for mental health issues. Dorow stated that four specialists had looked into Brooks’ state of mind, and they all concluded that there was “not support for the special plea.”
Brooks was out on bond at the time of his crime. He represented himself during the trail and asked for a not guilty verdict by reason of insanity.
“I of course through my sentencing… I can’t answer all the questions, I can’t address all of the issues, including the why,” Dorow said, according to Rolling Stone. “It’s my opinion that mental health issues did not cause him to do what he did.”
Brooks interrupted Dorow as she was delivering her comments, prompting her to have him removed from the court. Brooks was returned later but caused another recess after speaking over Dorow again.
“Many families were devastated… Life is short and these were lives taken far too short… They asked me to hold Mr. Brooks accountable so he wouldn’t have the opportunity to hurt anyone ever again,” Dorow said as she read some of the families of the victims’ stories during the sentencing on Wednesday.
