California Gov. Newsom says he told White House he will not run in 2024 regardless of President Biden’s decision

California Governor Gavin Newsom told Politico earlier this month that he has spoken to several people at the White House and told them all he will not run for president in 2024 regardless of whether President Biden decides to seek reelection.

As Democratic leaders move to usher in a new generation of leadership in Washington, DC, Newsom has made it clear, he says, that he will not seek the Democratic nomination for POTUS in the next general election.

“I’ve told everyone in the White House, from the chief of staff to the first lady,” Newsom told Politico reporter Jonathan Martin on the evening of the midterm elections.

According to Martin, Newsom told Biden himself on election night that he would not seek the nomination in 2024.

Newsom has repeatedly denied claims that he may announce his candidacy for president in 2024, reportedly telling Vice President Kamala Harris as early as July that he will not enter the race.

He also told CBS News earlier this month that he does not intend to run. “It’s not my ambition, and it’s not the direction that I’m leaning into,” Newsom said. “It’s not the moment.”

Biden has not yet announced his intentions for 2024, but told reporters in a November 9 press briefing that he would likely make a decision early next year after talking with his family.

“Now, my intention is that I run again. But I’m a great respecter of fate,” Biden said. “And this is, ultimately, a family decision. I think everybody wants me to run, but they’re go – we’re going to have discussions about it.  And I don’t feel any … hurry one way or another … to make that judgment today.”
