Rep. Santos allegedly had 7-year marriage with Brazilian national.
Rep George Santos (R-NY) reportedly married a Brazilian woman when he was 24. The marriage lasted 7 years.
During the time of the marriage, Santos reportedly worked several sporadic jobs, was embroiled in evictions and dated several men, one of whom he proposed to in 2014.
By 2019, Santos’s marriage was over. This happened shortly before he launched his first congressional campaign. His old relationship was put under the microscope on Wednesday, via a letter filed with ethics watchdogs in the House of Representatives who requested an investigation into whether Santos has violated federal immigration laws.
The investigation was requested by Malcolm Lazin, who is an LGBTQ rights activist and former federal prosecutor, to the House Ethics Committee and Office of Congressional Ethics
Lazin said that while he doesn’t have any firsthand knowledge or clear evidence that Santos’ marriage was a sham. Lazin said that details such as Santos and his wife living apart and Santos dating men were red flags.
During the marriage, Santos’ wife obtained citizenship through her husband, a U.S. citizen. Immigration have said that this does not indicate that the marriage was a sham.
In an interview in December with news outlet City & State, Santos hinted that he was not openly gay during his first marriage. “I did marry young, and I married a young woman at the time, and we pretty much were in love,” he said.
Santos went onto say that the relationship ended after he made the decision to come out. “I set myself free and I set her free,” he said.
Santos confirmed that he is now in a committed relationship with a man.
