Fast and furious – next level
Chairman Issa’s investigation of Operation Fast and Furious advanced to the next level today, with a very far-reaching subpoena.
Details of the Fast and Furious subpoena
David Codrea, National Gun Rights Examiner, received and reprinted in detail a press release from the House Oversight Committee. Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA), its chairman, said this:
Top Justice Department officials, including Attorney General Holder, know more about Operation Fast and Furious than they have publicly acknowledged. The documents this subpoena demands will provide answers to questions that Justice officials have tried to avoid since this investigation began eight months ago. It’s time we know the whole truth.
The subpoena asks for twenty-two sets of communications and other documents. The first asks for anything sent by or two sixteen different persons. They include Attorney General Eric Holder, his immediate deputy, a former deputy, and thirteen other ranking Justice Department officers.
That section alone might be damaging enough. But the second section asks for all back-and-forth messages between DOJ and the Executive Office of the President. They include messages sent by or two Eric Schultz, Associate Communications Director at the White House. Recall that Schultz is the White House official who RANTED AND RAVED AND SCREAMED AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS at CBS reporter Sharyl Attkisson. That outburst came after she, alone in the mainstream media, had the temerity to report extensively on Operation Fast and Furious.
The third section demands any messages having to do with a March 22, 2011 interview between Barack H. Obama and Jorge Ramos of the Spanish-language cable channel Univision (You-knee-vee-ZYOHN). Anthony Martin, the National Conservative Examiner, guesses why Issa wants to know about that interview:
Ramos…allegedly has extensive knowledge concerning Obama’s immigration policy, particularly with regard to Mexico.
The other 19 sections give names and dates that more clearly show Issa’s interest. He wants to know, among other things:
- How Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry died.
- How the guns that killed him turned up in the hands of his eventual murderers.
- How DOJ came to start something like Fast and Furious.
- How the DOJ reacted to Agent Terry’s death in the line of duty.
- What the Mexican government had to say about the flow of guns into that country.
What will happen next?
Codrea, Martin, and Dave Workman of Seattle all expect Holder, and Obama, to refuse, and to refuse indignantly on the ground of “executive privilege.”
Clearly Holder knew that this was coming. That’s why he chose yesterday to release information about the Iran terror plot. Some activists still insist that this plot is either a false-flag operation or a trap that the FBI laid for an Iranian-American who couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Either way, the Iran terror plot occupied one-third of the news cycle today. Several former American and Israeli ambassadors are already calling for armed retaliation. Holder must have thought that such talk would stop the investigation, or persuade the media to leave it, and him, alone.
Neither thing happened. Instead, Issa issued his subpoena this morning. Mike Vanderboegh at Sipsey Street Irregulars reports that the mainstream media immediately closed ranks around the DOJ. “Witch hunt!” they cried. They would have done better to ignore the event. Instead, they not only made abject fools of themselves, but also kept the story in the news cycle. Even the Iran terror plot cannot compete with a possible Constitutional crisis.
