Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg says ‘no two countries run by women would ever go to war’
Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer (COO) of Meta, says she believes that “no two countries run by women would ever go to war.” Sandberg’s comments appear to be referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
According to the Hill, Sandberg pointed to countries led by women during COVID that did far better than those run by men. However, she said that the pandemic has also seen major setbacks for gender equality and women in the workforce. The Meta CPP said she believes that if half the world were run by women, it would be “safer” and “much more prosperous.”
Sandberg discussed how she believes social media is “bad for dictators.” She added that “That’s why Putin took us down.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has banned Facebook in Russia as a result of the widespread condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Twitter has also become harder to use in the country (CNBC).
Sanberg said, “When [Facebook and Instagram] go down in Russia, people are losing their ability to actually understand what’s happening. We need to fight for access [and] make sure that social media exists so that people do get information from all over the world, and that that information is valid and real.”
