Stacey Abrams to seek access to ‘unlimited funding’ due to running unopposed in primary election
Democrat superstar and candidate for Georgia governor, Stacey Abrams, is seeking access to a fundraising vehicle that would allow her to raise unlimited funds in her campaign, claiming she is the only Democrat running for governor in the primary election.
Abrams filed to start the One Georgia Leadership Committee that under Georgia law, would be allowed to coordinate with candidate campaigns to raise unlimited funds, unlike individual donors, whose donations are capped at $7,600 for the primary election, and an additional $7,600 for the November election.
Incumbent Governor Brian Kemp formed the Georgians First Leadership Committee after signing the law and raised $2.3 million by January.
Abrams’ campaign argues it should be able to compete on equal footing with Kemp, and because no other candidates filed to run during the qualifying period, Abrams argues she is effectively the Democrat candidate.
Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission is working to determine whether an affidavit from state Democratic Party chair and U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams would be sufficient to make Abrams the official Democrat candidate before any votes have been cast.
Williams Tweeted on Friday that the Democrat Party considers Abrams their candidate for Georgia governor.
