President Biden accidentally says ‘End of quote. Repeat the line’ in teleprompter speech
During a speech on Friday about protecting women’s reproductive rights, President Joe Biden misspoke as he read from the teleprompter, accidentally saying “end of quote, repeat the line.”
“It is noteworthy has the number of women who have registered to vote and cast a ballot is consistently higher than the number of men who do so. End of quote. Repeat the line. Women are not without electoral and or political, or – let me be precise, not ‘and or.’ Or political power,” Biden said during his address, as noted by Newsweek.
In his speech, Biden spoke of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, repeatedly saying that the court’s ruling “was not a decision driven by the Constitution.”
“The truth is today’s Supreme Court majority that is playing fast and loose with the facts. Even 150 years ago, the common law and many state laws did not criminalize abortion early in pregnancy, which is very similar to the viability line drawn by Roe,” he said, later adding, “So, what we’re witnessing wasn’t a constitutional judgment. It was an exercise in raw political power.”
Biden also encouraged voters to elect more pro-choice senators to codify Roe v. Wade. “One of the most important extraordinary parts of the decision, in my view, is the majority writes, and I quote — I’m going to quote now from the majority — ‘Women are not without electoral or political power, it is noteworthy that the percentage of women who register to vote and cast a ballot is consistently higher than the percentage of the men who do so,’ end of quote, repeat the line.”
“That’s another way of saying, you, the women of America, can determine the outcome of this issue,” he continued. “I don’t think the Court, or for that matter the Republicans who for decades have pushed the extreme agenda, have a clue about the power of American women, but they’re about to find out in my view.”
Biden added that “the fastest way to restore Roe is to pass a national law codifying” the now-overturned law.
Biden’s teleprompter gaffe sparked varying responses on Twitter, with some mocking the president and others arguing that Biden didn’t actually misspeak.
Responding to Greg Price, who noted Biden’s gaffe on Twitter, White House Assistant Press Secretary Emilie Simons claimed Biden actually said “let me repeat that line.” Christina Pushaw, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ Press Secretary, pushed back, Tweeting: “Everyone can see the video and hear what he said, yet you are lying about it. Do you think 1984 was an instruction manual?”
