San Francisco DA refuses to turn Pelosi attacker over to ICE: ‘San Francisco is a sanctuary city’

Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are currently attempting to deport David DePape, the man accused of attacking U.S. Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer.

DePape is a Canadian citizen who arrived in the United States in 2008 on a temporary visa which has been expired for some time now.

However, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said Thursday that she will not hand DePape over for deportation, as this is in line with San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy.

“San Francisco is a sanctuary city, and our policy is sacred,” Jenkins said. “We will not be collaborating or coordinating with ICE.”

She added that discussions with ICE would be a waste of time as “Mr. DePape is facing life in prison.”

DePape is currently being held in a San Francisco jail and has been denied bond.

San Francisco’s Sheriff’s Office took a more neutral stance and said that the sheriff “reviews ICE requests on a case-by-case basis to determine whether informing ICE of Mr. DePape’s release date, if any, is consistent with our local sanctuary city ordinances.”

“The Sheriff will evaluate all information, up to the time of any release date, before making that decision,” spokesperson Kelvin Wu said, noting they will only be able to start the deportation process if DePape is released from jail.
