Israel stands almost alone

Members of the Israel Defense Forces on the Golan Heights. These are the real men of ideals in the Middle East. Zionism encompasses men like these, who act in defense.

Israel stands almost alone as it fights for its survival. Only Canada seems to stand with Israel. And American Jews must now decide whether to support Barack Hussein Obama anymore. And part of that includes whether they care about something called Israel, and how safe they really are.

Israel v. Obama

Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel lost his temper. He yelled at US Ambassador Ben Shapiro,

Time has run out!

Congressman Mike Rogers, head of a key House committee, saw and heard everything.

Since then, sharply different reports have come out about how putative President Barack Obama reacted to having someone yell at his ambassador. (And in front of an opposition legislator.) A citizen journalist at The American Dream thinks Obama “cut a deal” with Israel. The terms: Israel would hold off on attacking Iran until after the election. In return, the USA would give Israel enough “bunker buster bombs” (and some of our best ones) to crack the bunkers where the Iranians are making weapons-grade uranium.

But as part of that deal, the leaders of Israel expected Obama to say publicly what “red lines” the Iranians dare not cross if it would not risk war. Obama has said nothing along that line. And these articles came out before the Democratic Party wrote a platform that mentioned neither God nor Jerusalem as capital of Israel. (Democratic Party leaders walked that back, but clearly did not mean it.)

And why did General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, say that he “did not want to be complicit” in an Israel-Iran war? That’s why Mitt Romney, accepting his party’s nomination, said,

Obama has thrown Israel under the bus.

Why did Obama postpone, then scale back, planned joint war games with Israel?

Furthermore, Democratic Party leaders have behaved almost without discipline. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, who leads the Democratic National Committee, made the worst offense. On Monday, she said that Israeli officials accused Republicans of putting Israel at risk by criticizing Obama. She said that Ambassador Michael P. Oren was one of them. This made no sense at all. Michael Oren grew up in Brooklyn, NY in the Sixties. In 1967, when he was twelve, his father burst into the family kitchen waving the issue of Life bearing an iconic cover photo. It showed a Tzahal soldier, waist-deep in the Suez Canal, brandishing a captured Kalashnikov rifle. Said the elder Oren:

There! You see? That is what we can do!

The young Oren took that to heart. As an adult, he “made Aaliyah”, i.e., emigrated to Israel He wrote one of the finest histories of the Six-day War in print today. This man would say that Republicans were at fault? In Hebrew, Lo, lo, v lo! And when Wasserman-Schultz quoted him that way, he denied it flatly.

Ambassadors do not usually mix into the politics of their host countries. And they definitely do not accuse politicians in those host countries of lying. So when Ambassador Oren “categorically [denied]” saying such a thing, he was being polite.

And Wasserman-Schultz knew it. So then she accused The Washington Examiner of misquoting her on purpose. But she forgot one thing: the reporter had recorded her remarks.

She has carried water for Barack Obama since he named her to lead the Democratic National Committee. She likely says what Barack Obama tells her to say. So Obama abandons Israel, and then tries to drive a wedge between American Jews and Israel’s real supporters.

Israel and Canada?

Oddly enough, one country dealt the sharpest rebuke yet toward Iran yesterday. It wasn’t the United States. It was Canada. Yesterday the Canada foreign office closed the Canadian Embassy in Teheran. Then they told all Iranian diplomats to leave Canada within five days.

Throwing out the diplomats is bad enough. Wars have begun that way. But the Canadian foreign minister then said this:

Canada views the Government of Iran as the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today.

The foreign minister did worse: he formally called Iran a State sponsor of terrorism, according to Canadian law.

What is wrong with this picture? Just this. Our own Secretary of State should be saying these things. Instead, Obama, in an “open mike moment,” assured Dmitri Medvedev (MYED-vyeh-dyev) months ago that

After my election, I will have more flexibility.

And this week his stand-in as head of his party tries to drive wedges between his opposition and an ambassador who clearly knows better.

To American Jews: now decide

Wayne Allyn Root, on Thursday, took a hard line: Jews should abandon Obama. He notes the obvious: Jews have voted Democratic at least since Harry S. Truman’s day. Truman, don’t forget, was the first to recognize Israel. (And he overrode his own very bitter Secretary of State to do it.) As a Jew himself, Root now asks his fellow Jews whether voting Democratic is smart anymore.

Is a vote for Obama a vote condemning Israel to become a sitting duck in the name of liberal U.S. politics or political correctness? Even more importantly, is voting for Obama over social issues or a woman’s right to choose worth risking another Holocaust?

Israel will not wait for another Holocaust. They recently built another base on the Camp David Treaty Line. Nor do they take war lightly. They might not wait for any “bunker busters.”

Uh, no. Israel won’t be supplied with the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator. There wouldn’t be any point; they have no aircraft capable of carrying one.
